Southern PIE-Lands Judged Australia’s Best Marketing Campaign
A big congratulations to Destination Southern Highlands Tourism Manager, Steve Rosa and the team for winning Best Marketing Campaign at the Australian Tourism Awards for their ‘Pie Time’ campaign.
Congratulations also to the team at Shoalhaven Tourism for winning Silver in the Destination Marketing category for their
‘100 Beach Challenge’ campaign.
The awards were announced at a gala event held in Launceston over the weekend.
We are certainly very pleased to have two of the best marketing campaigns in Australia, right here in our region – congratulations again to all those involved!


New Direction for Economic Development in Southern Highlands
Wingecarribee Shire Council has this week announced that the corporate portfolio of Economic Development will be merged with the existing Tourism portfolio.
In an excellent outcome for the local visitor economy, the new structure will be driven by Council’s existing Manager of Tourism and Events, Steve Rosa whose title will change to Group Manager Tourism and Economic Development to reflect the new role.


Statewide Destination Management Plan Launched
In a first for the State, the NSW Government has delivered a Statewide Destination Management Plan (DMP). Launched in early February, the plan is designed to provide a high level framework to achieve alignment across NSW and assist coordinated delivery of the vision and goal for the NSW visitor economy. Creation of the plan was identified as a deliverable under the NSW Government’s Visitor Economy Industry Action Plan 2030 (VEIAP). Download the plan.

Beyond Tourism 2020
Consultations are now open on Australia’s next national tourism strategy. Industry stakeholders are encouraged to have their say on a draft report developed by the Beyond Tourism 2020 Steering Committee. Submissions are due 8 March 2019 and must be submitted via the website.

Major Events Secured for Wollongong and Kiama
A number of major events secured for the region were announced last week, including 3 Festival, a new arts, science and technology festival, to be held in Wollongong and delivered in collaboration with Ars Electronica. Also announced for Wollongong was the Trans-Tasman rugby league double-header between Kangaroos and New Zealand to be held in late October.
While a collaboration between Destination NSW and Destination Kiama has successfully negotiated a three year deal to keep the
Bodyboard King Pro in Kiama until 2021.

New Signage for ‘Bypassed’ Country Towns
It’s no longer out of sight, out of mind for country towns bypassed by major highways, thanks to the rollout of iconic image signs reminding motorists of the delight they are passing. The initiative follows a successful trial held in last 2017 and early last year, to promote three bypassed communities including Berry, on the South Coast. The initiative is being led by Roads and Maritime Services, in consultation Destination NSW.

Join Slow Food’s Snail of Approval
Local food producers, artisan, retail outlets and restaurants across the South Coast are invite to join Slow Food’s new initiative, Snail of Approval. The program is designed to support businesses that promote the Slow Food message of good, clean and fair food. Nominations close Friday 15 March 2019.

New Corporate Website for Southern Highlands Tourism
Destination Southern Highlands and Southern Highlands Food & Wine Association have launched a new corporate website, shcorporate.com.au, aimed at delivering key information to their tourism and food & wine sector industries. The new portal includes key industry information including Media, E-News, Member Login, Marketing Opportunities, Trade Events and more.

New Cheese-Tasting World Record Set in Kangaroo Valley
A new world record for cheese-tasting was set during February as hundreds of cheese lovers and cheese makers converged on the Kangaroo Valley Show. The previous record of 560 people was smashed as 1,000 people lined up to taste the 36kg of chees generously donated by local dairies.

Music Now Contemporary Live Music Funding Program
The NSW Government through Create NSW and the Office of Responsible Gaming is offering funding of up to $40,000 for a one-off, series or an annual program of live music events held in NSW between 1 May 2019 and 31 December 2020. The funding program aims to encourage venues to hold more music events, and increase audience participation and paid employment for artists. Venues, promoter or collectives are encouraged to apply. Applications close 14 March 2019.
Diploma of Event Management Regional Scholarship Program
Destination NSW has partnered with Meetings and Events Australia (MEA), the peak body representing the events industry in Australia to develop the Regional Scholarship Program which will offer scholarships to people in regional NSW to undertake a Diploma of Event Management.
Applications are now open and close on 24 March 2019.
My Community Project
The NSW Government is encouraging participation in their new program My Community Project. For the first time individuals will be able to put forward their ideas community projects for government funding and vote for the best ideas in their area. Grants of up to $200,000 are available.
Applications open 2 April and close 15 May 2019.
To encourage investment and development of tourism infrastructure, local government, tourism and sector organisations, and private enterprise are encouraged to apply for funding to implement projects across NSW. Proposals are to be submitted by 30 June 2019.
