We are very pleased to share the Minister’s announcement today launching the newly developed Sydney Surrounds South Destination Management Plan 2022-2030 (DMP).
Unveiled by the Minister for Tourism, the Hon. Ben Franklin MLC, as part of the launch of seven new Destination Management Plans (DMPs) for regional NSW, the plan highlights the unique strengths of Sydney Surrounds South and includes targeted actions for Government and industry collaboration to facilitate growth of a sustainable visitor economy and increased visitor spend.
Minister for Tourism Ben Franklin said the new DMP recognised the strategic context of the state’s Visitor Economy Strategy 2030 and would pave the way for Sydney Surrounds South to contribute to the targets for regional NSW within the strategy.
“The new Destination Management Plan identifies the unique opportunities we have in this region, and the stakeholders that will play a part in realising those so Government and industry can work hand-in-hand. We are excited to share this work with local visitor economy businesses, industry bodies and local communities so we can continue to build on, deliver and promote excellent visitor experiences that align with our goals.”
The Sydney Surrounds South visitor economy delivers 6.6% of the region’s jobs, supports 6,295 businesses and directly delivers 4.0% ($1.3 billion) of the region’s Gross Value Add (GVA) which has grown every year since 2010-11 at an average 4.9% pa. The region attracted just over 13 million visitors and 14 million visitor nights (for the year ended December 2019, pre-bushfires and Covid).
The DMP creates a collaborative framework to guide the work of local, regional, and state tourism stakeholders to grow, develop, and promote the region’s visitor economy to 2030 as well as contributing to the NSW Government’s target to achieve $25 billion in visitor expenditure by 2030. A target that is set out in the Visitor Economy Strategy 2030 (VES), the DMP further aligns to the VES with actions for the recovery, momentum and accelerate phases to 2030.
The Sydney Surrounds South DMP is one of seven plans released today, in a first for the Destination Networks the suite of documents were developed in consultation with one another to better support cross-DN projects and provide improved outcomes for the whole of regional NSW visitor economy. Bringing these documents together is an overarching advocacy document to set the scene for regional NSW. Download the ‘Growing the Regional NSW Visitor Economy to 2030’ document here.
The DSSS Board and Team are very excited to share this key strategic document with you, we thank everyone who contributed to its development and we look forward to working closely with our industry and partners to deliver the actions outlined to grow the Sydney Surrounds South visitor economy.
