Tourism Research Australia (TRA) has released its monthly snapshot of the National Visitor Survey for January 2022, and overall results indicates a continued improvement compared to December 2021. This was particularly the case for spend (up 48% or $2.8 billion). Australians spent $8.5 billion on overnight trips in January. This was more than any other time during the pandemic. This was due to:
- the holiday season
- an easing of further restrictions
- the move towards ‘living with COVID’.
However, the COVID-19 pandemic continued to affect Australia’s domestic tourism market overall. Results were still down on pre-pandemic levels.
