Making a Difference
Each month the Centre of Excellence will shine the light on how its programs have impacted tourism and hospitality operators and workers in the three regions including how they have benefited from the training and experiences and how this knowledge has had positive impact on their business and careers. If you have a story, please share with us.
Since September 2022 the Centre of Excellence has delivered five local knowledge famils across the three local government areas showcasing local produce and experiences and attractions. The purpose of these famils is to inform those working in tourism and hospitality of the local offerings to enable them to refer visitors to businesses so they have a memorable experience and spend more in the regions.
The Centre of Excellence has followed up with those that participated to learn about the impact the famils have had on the way they do business and how they have shared this new knowledge:
“We were in the last stages of opening a restaurant and have partnered with several local wineries and breweries to use their products in our restaurant.”
– Gerald Poelzl, Farmgate Restaurant
“The local area knowledge famil hosted by the South Coast Centre of Excellence has expanded my knowledge of the food and beverage offerings in the Bega Valley. After a kayak tour, many of my guests ask for recommendations for places to dine out or must-do food experiences in the region. Thanks to this knowledge, I can now confidently recommend oyster providers, restaurants, and breweries for my guests to experience while they are staying on the South Coast. It was beneficial to meet the owners, hear their inspiring backstories, learn about their plans for the future, and sample their offerings.”
– Jess Taunton, Navigate Expeditions
“Making suggestions to people staying at my B&B to visit the Shoalhaven wineries and breweries visited on the famil.” – Tim Johnston, Barefoot Springs B&B
“Utilizing products/services we came across to showcase the regions offerings on our social media platforms.” – Garry Sullivan, Beachcomber Holiday Park
“When guests have been booking properties, we always ask what they are coming to the area for and then provide suggestions on places to go and see or places to visit and try.”
– Cassandra Shimmen, Haven Retreats Pty Ltd
“So many of our guests ask us what else we recommend to do, see, taste, or try and now we’re so much more informed! Also, we’re partnering with some of the producers to use their products at our events, on our tours, and for gifts for VIPs. It’s awesome!”
– Travis Frenay, Valley Outdoors
